How to Achieve Proper Contrast in Your Watercolor Paintings

Sep 15, 2021

When you want to capture a particularly bright scene, you will want to make sure the light really pops in your painting. To accomplish this, you will want to focus on contrast and achieving that full range of value.

I think it is helpful when you can see what something looks like when it goes right and what it looks like when it doesn’t.

So in this week’s blog, I look back at an old painting of mine with very little contrast and compare it to a more recent painting that has a rich contrast between light and dark. I also give you some easy mixing tips that can help you to create vibrant light that you want in certain paintings.

I hope this short lesson on contrast helps you to create dynamic light in your paintings. Keep practicing, keep painting, keep pushing forward, and I'll see you next time.
