Using Gouache To Create Highlights in Watercolor Painting

Let me show you the difference a little gouache, used strategically, can make to a nearly-finished painting.

When I am looking for some final touches and to add some little bits of light at the end of a painting, I sometimes turn to gouache. Gouache can be a helpful tool if you have small little highlights that you want in your painting, but you weren’t able to paint around them throughout the whole painting process.

Gouache allows you to go back into a painting and add the illusion of more detail and light. It can be a helpful tool in watercolor painting.
