Next Retreat Destination Announced!

Sep 29, 2025

Let me tell you about my friend, Colin.

He's the kind of friend who, when I let him on my dreams, goals, and accomplishments, he celebrates with me and amps me up.

He's the guy who early on said to me, "Man, in ten years, you're going to be off painting in Italy!"

At this point, the dream of traveling as a watercolor artist hadn't been fully realized in me, so I laughed it off and kept my head down.

But his words did something in me. They gave me permission to aspire toward these experiences. And, years later, when the opportunity actually presented itself to me to lead a retreat in Europe, his confidence in me helped bolster the confidence I had in myself.

Traveling With Uptrek

That opportunity came just a few years ago when a company called Uptrek approached me about hosting a watercolor retreat in France, and then - the following year - in Sicily!

And since Colin is an insanely talented videographer and photographer, I invited him along with me to document this second trip.

Here are some highlights from our trip that included visits to Palarmo, the gorgeous coastal town of Cefalù, the charming village of Gangi, and at the ancient Castello di Sperlinga fortress.

Creating Community Around Watercolor

It was thrilling to explore landmarks, learn history, and take in the unique architecture and landscapes. But perhaps the most memorable aspect of the trip is watching a group of strangers become friends over the span of 7 days.

Some attendees were absolute beginners; others were seasoned. This retreat was designed to meet everyone where they're at - and the next one is too. These trips allow me the freedom to check in with everyone individually and answer each artist's most pressing questions. I'm able to lead the group through my 3-step watercolor painting process, help them tackle the subjects they're inspired by, and give them advice as they need it.

But it's really the excursions, the group meals, and the down time that solidify the bonds that form on a trip like this. Strangers connected over their love of art and new experiences, and we walked away friends.
