It is not only possible to make a great living as an artist, it's easier than you think.

I have time to paint, time to create, and most importantly time to be with my young family. All of this is possible because I learned how to grow my audience and passively sell my online course and community. 

This may sound impossible but it isn't. You just need to take it one step at a time and take advantage of readily available technology and resources. 

You can make a living off of teaching something that you already know how to do. Below are action steps to get you started.

Own Your Audience 

It's important to start growing an email list as soon as you can. We have all seen how algorithms change and platforms come and go. Email is still the most reliable promotional tool that we have. It has remained steady in a world of constant technological change. You must start building your list as soon as you can whether you are ready to sell anything or not. 

In order to do this you need to create consistent quality content that is relevant to your target audience. This could be a weekly blog post, video on Youtube etc.

Find your preferred evergreen platform to place your content on. You want to focus on a platform that has searchable content that doesn't go away. This could be a blog (that is searchable on Google), Youtube (which is the number 2 search engine) or Pinterest (the number 3 search engine).

Avoid platforms that constantly favor new content such as Instagram, or TikTok. It's not that you can't have a presence there, but these avenues won't bring you fresh leads continually over time. You want your content to be searchable and to last forever.

Each blog, newsletter, or video you create is like an employee working on your behalf. It will draw in new warm leads 24/7 once it is posted.

Create a Lead Magnet

A lead magnet is a free, ultra-valuable giveaway that you offer to those that consume your content. At the end of each of my Youtube videos I invite the viewer to download my FREE GUIDE. By including your lead magnet, your content is now valuable and is working on your behalf to produce leads.

Think about the most common problem that you could solve in your niche. What is something that was a big "ah-ha" moment for you in your learning?

The key here is to make it easy to consume and most importantly help the client to achieve an easy win.

When they sign up for this incredible download, they sign up to your email list to receive it. This is how you start to build your email list, the backbone of your business.

Automatically Sell Your Digital Products (Don't have one? That's ok.)

Once a potential customer signs up to your list they will receive an automated series of emails. Each of these emails provide lots of value and quality teaching on the most important topics in your niche. 

Eventually you offer them an invitation to buy your digital product. The reason this is more successful than selling over social media is because they have gotten to know and trust you, and you have provided great value to them each step of the way. 

I love this business model because you write the sales emails once and deliver them over and over again. This is all done automatically while you paint, sleep, or spend time with your family.

You build it once and sell it forever. It’s a great business model that is very sustainable.
