An Easy Brushwork Exercise

May 26, 2021

You cannot grow unless you take some chances.

When you are painting a full painting, it's east to feel tentative. You make it very precious, and every mark has to work.

This is why it is so important that you commit to some practice exercises where you are free to take chances and experiment because without these opportunities, you will not see the growth that you want.

One of the best subjects for watercolor artists to practice their brushwork on is a tree. The reason why this brush work exercise works so well is because you're:

  • Using a variety of brushes,
  • Getting a variety of edges,
  • Creating values,
  • Practicing wet-into-wet painting, and
  • Doing dry brushwork too.

This one small practice exercise covers a wide range of skills that are important to keep developing. This is something easy that you can do that covers a lot of ground.

Small exercises like these can be fun because they don't really have any consequences. They’re just good ways for you to sharpen your skills.
