How To Mix Easy, Natural Greens

Sep 15, 2025

Nature presents a wide variety of greens. Depending on the season, time of day, and shadows in the scene, you'll find a need to mix all sorts of different greens. But you're in luck - I am going to share with you my process of mixing natural greens - and you'll only need four colors.

The Four Colors You Need to Make A Wide Range of Greens

The four colors on my palette that I use to mix a broad spectrum of greens are: Cobalt Turquoise, Raw Sienna, Cadmium Yellow Light Hue, and Cobalt Blue.

Olive Green = Cobalt Turquoise + Raw Sienna

Good Uses for This Green: trees and foliage

Lighter Green = Cobalt Turquoise + Raw Sienna + Cadmium Yellow Light Hue

Good Uses for This Green: a well-lit field, blades of sun-soaked grass

Vibrant Green = Cobalt Turquoise + Cadmium Yellow Light Hue

Good Uses for This Green: springtime grass and blossoms

Cooler Green = Cobalt Turquoise + Raw Sienna + Cobalt Blue

Good Uses for This Green: trees off in the distance

Experiment With These Colors and See What Greens You Can Make

Now that you know which colors I use to mix greens, you can expand from there. Different ratios and combinations of these four colors will get you a wide spectrum of greens for any landscape that requires them! Try them out and see what you can come up with!
